One of the most special parts of being at Tremfan Lodge Park in Llanbedrog, on the beautiful Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales, is the constant connection with nature. Surrounded by mature trees and coastal countryside, the park provides the perfect setting for local wildlife to thrive.
Our Resident Woodpeckers
Whilst we have been working on park this winter, and as our first owners return for the start of the season, many have noticed the steady tapping sound echoing through the trees. That distinctive drumming from our resident woodpeckers has become part of the peaceful atmosphere here at Tremfan Lodge Park. Even when the birds are hidden high in the branches, you can almost always hear them and it is a reassuring reminder that the park remains full of life all year round.
Our resident woodpecker, and the most common woodpecker found in this part of North Wales, is the Great Spotted Woodpecker. With its striking black and white markings and flash of red beneath the tail, it is a beautiful sight against our woodland setting. They are especially noticeable in the early morning and late afternoon when they are feeding. During spring, the drumming becomes more frequent as they mark territory and attract a mate. In autumn and winter, when the leaves have fallen, they are often easier to spot moving between the trees.
Why Do Woodpeckers Drum?
The tapping sound you hear is not random. Woodpeckers drum on tree trunks to communicate and establish territory. They also search for insects beneath the bark and create nesting holes during the breeding season, providing safe shelter for their young. Each drum is like a message, unique to the bird, and hearing it in the trees gives a sense of being immersed in the woodland world.
Encouraging Wildlife on Park
For those who enjoy supporting local wildlife, woodpeckers can be helped during the colder months when natural food sources are less available. They are particularly fond of peanuts in mesh feeders, suet balls, fat blocks and sunflower hearts. Using proper bird feeders is important, and salted or processed foods should always be avoided.
Wildlife is a real part of everyday life at Tremfan Lodge Park. The sound of woodpeckers in the trees, the sea air drifting across from the bay, and the slower pace of life all contribute to what makes being on the Llŷn Peninsula so special. It is not just a place to stay; it is a place to truly experience the natural beauty of North Wales.
