May is National Walking Month, and here on the beautiful Llŷn Peninsula, there’s no better time to step outside and enjoy the breath taking coastal scenery on foot. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just love a gentle stroll, walking is a fantastic way to unwind, stay active, and discover the natural beauty right on our doorstep.
What is National Walking Month?
National Walking Month is all about encouraging people to walk more, whether it’s for health, relaxation, or simply to explore the outdoors. It’s a chance to swap the car for your walking boots, reconnect with nature, and enjoy the slower pace of life that comes with travelling on foot. We also love it as it a sustainable activity.
Discover Walks Around Tremfan Lodge Park and Beyond
At Tremfan Lodge Park, you’re in the perfect place to enjoy some of the most scenic walks on the Llŷn Peninsula. From coastal paths to hilltop views, our favourite walks are featured in our previous blog, Walking Out of Lockdown.
Away from the Llanbedrog, we particularly enjoy walking around Criccieth, Borth-y-Gest and Porthmadog. If you’re looking for a stunning coastal walk packed with variety, history, and unforgettable views, the route from Criccieth to Porthmadog is a must. This beautiful stretch of the Wales Coast Path can be enjoyed as one long, rewarding hike or broken into shorter sections if you prefer to take things at a gentler pace.
The journey begins in Criccieth, a charming seaside town dominated by its dramatic clifftop castle and sweeping views over Cardigan Bay. From here, the path hugs the coastline, leading you to the vast expanse of Black Rock Sands, a wide, windswept beach where you’ll often spot kite surfers and families enjoying the open space.
Continuing along the coast, the trail meanders through quiet woodland and coastal coves before arriving at Borth-y-Gest, a hidden gem with colourful cottages and a peaceful harbour, perfect for a picnic or a quick coffee stop.
The final leg takes you into Porthmadog marina and the town but don’t stop here as the walk becomes extra special as the path runs alongside the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway. There’s something magical about strolling beside the narrow-gauge tracks as steam trains puff past on their scenic routes to Blaenau Ffestiniog and Caernarfon.
Whether you complete the walk in one go or explore it in stages, this route offers a brilliant blend of natural beauty, coastal charm, and a touch of nostalgic railway romance. Don’t forget your camera, you’ll want to capture every step!
Walk Independently or Join a Group
Many visitors love the freedom of walking independently around the coast, choosing their own pace and path. For inspiration and route ideas, you can explore the local sections of the Wales Coast Path, which are listed on walescoastalpath.gov.uk.
Prefer to walk with others? There are some great local groups offering guided and group walks across the Llŷn Peninsula, including:
- Llyn Ramblers – ideal for exploring the hidden gems of the area with knowledgeable leaders.
- Wellness Walks – a welcoming group focused on gentle, sociable walks for wellbeing.
- Clwb Taran Llŷn – a community group welcoming all speeds, all journeys, and all goals.
All groups publish their schedules online, check their websites and Facebook pages for upcoming walks.
Share Your Favourite Walks
This month is also about celebrating your favourite walking moments. Why not snap a photo on your next walk and share it on social media? Whether it is a morning wander to Llanbedrog Beach, a sunset over Pwllheli, or a windswept adventure along the coast, we’d love to see where your feet take you.
